Description

This handsome sheet was once attributed to Antoine Watteau, but Pierre Rosenberg’s exhaustive catalogue raisonné  downgraded it to” 18th century French.”  Eunice Williams originally thought it was composed after the brothers “Le Nain,” but on direct examination Sir Timothy Clifford and Professor Baker both suggested that the drawing can be more properly thought of as after David Teniers, the great 17th century painter of peasant life..
