Joseph Giovannini is the founder of Giovannini Associates, a design firm based in New York and Los Angeles. He holds the Masters in Architecture from Harvard, B.A. from Yale in English, and a Masters in French Language and Literature from the Sorbonne.
For three decades Joseph has written on architecture and design for such publications as the New York Times, Architectural Record, Art in America, Art Forum and Architecture Magazine. He has also served as the architecture critic for New York Magazine and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.
In this photograph Giovannini’s built habitat records an adept, an architect/visionary who has to a great degree disregarded the constraints of materiality, favoring rather an enhanced spatial sensibility. In doing so he references Constructivist, Suprematist, and Minimalist visual artists such as Malevich, Lissitzky, Kandinsky, and Rodchenko as well as Escher, Zaha Hadid, and Ellsworth Kelly! It feels playful to be in these apartments; our experience there was joyful. The integration of art history into the design of living quarters is innovative and daring—even cavalier–evidence of the deep learning and visual fluency of the architect.
