Pencil on paper; A near contemporary of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), Michel Garnier (1753-1819) was a gifted neo-classical painter and draftsman. This elegant little drawing depicts a Maenad with a Tambourine, a subject seen in Roman 1st century BC sculpture and frescoes depicting a female follower of Bacchus, traditionally associated with divine possession and frenzied rites.
