Description

In 2009, a 40-year retrospective organized by the Irish Museum of Modern Art recognized Benglis’s prolific career as a central figure in contemporary art unafraid of enthusiastically taking on charged subjects. The exhibition focused on periods when her work was most involved with links between painting and sculpture, including her famous knotted bowtie shaped wall reliefs like the current example from 1982. This extraordinarily fluid technique in metal seeming to take flight was facilitated by the genius of Jack Brogan, legendary fabricator in San Pedro, California.

Benglis resides in New York, Santa Fe, Greece, and Ahmedabab, India! She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, among many other notable awards. Between 1969 and 1995 over 75 solo exhibitions of her work occurred both in the United States and abroad
