The Spherical Harmonic objects in the four sequences of still images are made visible by light rays (photons) emitted from the internal surface of a hidden sphere that entirely surrounds the object. The hidden sphere, a unique photograph taken with a spherical camera, is the source of illumination in a modelling process unsurprisingly called “ray tracing.” We see in the upper sequences the impact of ray tracing on the mix of wood, steel and wire mesh objects, as well as from the highly reflective surfaces shown in the lower displays. While the images are deceptively simple, they embody three complex elements that give them life; they move steps beyond Laplace into the 21st century by combining Spherical Harmonics for form, surface conditions (e.g. reflectivity, texture and color) and the light from the sphere YOU DON’T SEE.
